What researchers say...

"Being above normal weight substantially increases the likelihood of suffering from heartburn and acid regurgitation, and obese people are almost three times as likely to experience these symptoms as those of normal weight."

International Journal of Epidemiology - Conclusion of The Bristol Helicobacter Project - Learn more

“If patients are able to lose weight, this lifestyle modification is very effective and can reduce or eliminate the need for medical therapy.”

Laura B. Gerson MD, Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology - Learn more.

"The overall prevalence of GERD symptoms is high (37%) in overweight and obese subjects. A structured weight loss program can lead to complete resolution of GERD symptoms in the majority of these subjects."

Why Scale Down for Relief?

Just listen to Sandy, Craig, and Brandie!

SM
Average weight loss for clients on the Optimal Weight 5&1 Plan (TM) with support is 20 pounds.

Recently we met Sandy Mason, a GERD sufferer who is symptom free today after losing weight on this program. At her peak, Sandy weighed 194 pounds (5’4”) with a BMI of 33. In less than seven months, Sandy lost 68 pounds and now has a BMI of 22*!  Sandy now works with Scale Down for Relief participants to achieve their weight loss goals. Although results can vary, according to medical researchers, "A structured weight loss program can lead to complete resolution of GERD symptoms in the majority of those overweight and obese."   Learn more

Craig
Average weight loss for clients on the Optimal Weight 5&1 Plan (TM) with support is 20 pounds.

Craig had gained 100+ pounds over 35 years.  He was on medications because of his weight, even struggling to put on socks, and having a hard time fitting into restaurant booths. He had already tried several different diet programs and had no idea what to do next.  He was introduced to a health coach, who as Craig says, “has changed my life.”  He lost over 100 pounds and now says “I feel better in my 50’s than I did in my 40’s*. I am so thankful.” Results may vary from Craig's, but according to the NIH, even a smaller weight loss of 5% - 10% will reduce the risk of heart disease and other chronic conditions.

Brandie
Average weight loss for clients on the Optimal Weight 5&1 Plan (TM) with support is 20 pounds.

Brandie was 40+ pounds overweight, facing serious health problems, and she knew something had to be done.  Afraid that being "healthy" was going to put a damper on her lively social life and gatherings with friends, she was hesitant.  However, she learned that choosing to change her lifestyle didn't change her friendships, but made them stronger.  Brandi took off and has maintained a 43 lb. weight loss. *  Not everyone will realize the same results as Brandie's, but these case studies provide a picture of what is possible.

Scale Down for Relief is the only weight loss program to include both acid reflux disease counseling and weight loss health coaching. Results will vary for each participant, but this combination has real potential for most adults in the early and moderate stages of GERD.

What RefluxMD members say...

“Between January 7, 2015 and mid July, I lost 68 pounds and was down to 126 pounds (BMI = 22), which I have been able to maintain. The results have been nothing short of miraculous! Not only am I off the PPIs, but my GERD symptoms are gone.”*

SANDY MASON

"At age 45, after being blessed with the birth of a surprise baby, I found myself unable to lose the last of the 50 pounds I had gained. That is when I learned about this program that taught me how to balance blood sugar and fuel my body correctly. As I followed the program, I easily and quickly lost the weight, my energy was much better and I noticed the chronic headaches I had suffered with for years began to dissipate." *

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this program also good for those with a normal BMI but wish to lose some weight?
We do not suggest Scale Down for Relief for anyone with a BMI less than 27.  Under that level, we recommend RefluxMD's Recipe for Relief that focuses on nutrition, meal planning, and food selection, while providing over 90 GERD-friendly recipes.

Is there a cost for the coaching services?
All the coaching services are included in SDFR at no cost and participants only pay for the meal replacements.  We believe that the cost of these meals is one of the best benefits of Scale Down for Relief.  The meal replacements are comparable, and in many cases less expensive, than those offered by other national weight loss programs.  Many participants report that the daily cost is typically less than they spend for their meals today, with the added benefit of online ordering and home delivery!

How long do you have to stay on this program to achieve your BMI goals?

Everyone is different when it comes to weight loss. We really can’t determine the answer to this question without speaking with you to gain more information. For those that schedule a conference call, we can provide some time ranges to achieve a target weight.

Are the replacement meals GERD-friendly?

Not all replacement meals are GERD-friendly, and RefluxMD provides counseling to all SDFR participants on the selection of replacement meals to avoid any trigger food symptoms.
