The Reflux Dilemma

Reflux disease impact millions of people, can lead to serious long-term complications, and costs the healthcare system billions of dollars each year. The current treatment model is failing those that suffer from reflux, yet little is being done to improve it.

Reflux disease is a serious, progressive, and often misunderstood disease. In fact, one in three American adults experience the heartburn and discomfort associated with reflux disease weekly. For some, reflux is simply a nuisance, but for many it impacts their ability to go about their daily lives.

Most treatment focuses on the relief of symptoms with medications, and while these medications can effectively control symptoms, they do nothing to correct the underlying causes of the disease. In addition, some of these drugs can have serious side effects when taken long term.

Unchecked, reflux disease can progress over time and it may lead to serious complications like esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus, and even cancer. In fact, the rate of reflux-induced esophageal cancer has increased more than 600% since 1975. Sadly, reflux-induced esophageal cancer is also one of the most lethal types of cancer— currently the overall likelihood of surviving five years is only 10-15%.

Isn’t It Time To Do More?
